“I am digging the socks…” is what I get from time to time at the office. I normally try to kick off and end my work week with something wild and bold. Socks were known as statement pieces until a few years ago. Before 2010, socks were just something you threw on to keep your feet from becoming sweaty or a comfort item. Now, it’s the complete opposite, socks are a necessity and there are so many of us that wouldn’t dare leave the house without a cool pair on.
Tip 1: Be You while choosing!
Individuality is a true form of self-expression, I have yet to find a sock brand that has a collection where every single sock speaks to me. What may be a “sweet” pair of socks to Jon Doe, doesn’t make everyone giggle with joy. You are the only person that truly knows what you may or may not like in a sock. Conservative designs with a tiny splash of color might be your thing… guess what there is a sock for you. Maybe you are into heavy over the knee socks with lots of crazy lines and 3D boxes…. You’re in luck because there is a sock for you. And just maybe you want whatever is new, fashion forward and Instagram worthy, well for sure know there is a sock for you.
Tip 2: Splurge, just a little
I can’t say we are all on a budget but some of us are. So, yes! You can be cheap when it comes to buying socks but it is probably not the best idea. Now, I have to clear this up “Not all discounted and inexpensive socks are a bad idea.” I’ve managed to get some great socks for discounted prices, you just have to know what to look for (we’ll discuss later). The average price for a single pair of premium socks is about $15 dollars. We are talking designer socks with some sort of comfort and quality manufactured into them. Now, I say splurge but I also mean be real with yourself and not live beyond your means. Don’t go out there and buy a pair of Cashmere socks for $80 bucks, when you know you need gas to get to work. Keep it honest and maybe once a week spend your $15 bucks on a decent pair of socks. Usually the more the cost, the better the quality and they’re worth every penny.
Tip3: Types – Dress, Casual, Active, etc
Being a guy who stays on the go from all of the activities I am involved in, sometimes find the right type sock for the right occasion is hard. For instance, I am cyclist (not Lance Armstrong) and when I first began riding I knew nothing about socks. I would wear low, ankle cut, thick socks. Well, this was a bad combination for me because of the feet swelling and sweating. So I went out and research cycling socks and came across DeFeet International, which is a sock company that specializes in cycling socks. You wouldn’t want a pair of dress socks on if you were about to run a 5K Marathon. Understanding sock types is important, being sure you have the right sock on is a must. Going on out with the friends, you can wear a casual, comfort sock or even throw on a dress sock. Playing basketball at the local playground or in the gym, you want to grab a pair that has protection and comfort. There are socks for all types of different occasions and knowing when and where you want to use them falls on you. Research and get a feel for what sock you are wearing, the judgment call is on you.
Tip 4: Colors & Designs
This isn’t the most important tip but it is surely close. Color blocking and design preference is huge when making a decision on socks. While socks have evolved into the statement piece, they gotten that way by using unique designs and bold colors. Outside of power meetings even in some, I would recommend going beyond black, white or grey. I tend to match my socks with my color or patterns in my shirt, it doesn’t exactly match but it is close. If you are feeling adventurous or really want to make some noise, wear a pair that has a creative phrase on them or a pair where the colors have nothing to do with your attire. But this is your opportunity to be different and another way to express yourself. I would only wear all white or black athletic socks in the gym or in a particular uniform situation. Color and designs are outrageous for a reason, make the best if it.
I might be opinionated on this but I think we have finally figured out a way to make a statement without the tie. Tips are just that tips, something to take into consideration when you are looking to do something. I am passionate about socks but with that said I do not know everything about socks. Take your time and choose the sock that fits your needs and your preference but do not be shy when it comes time to buy.
